To back up your car safely, the first thing that you must do is THINK. It is all too easy to zoom backwards without thought or preparation. This could end in mishap or even tragedy. Cars are big and heavy and can be dangerous. They will not stop automatically when in contact with something. The car relies completely on the driver. Look over both shoulders to check your blind spots and anything which may be at the sides. Once you have established that it is safe to back your car, do so slowly. Keep both hands on the steering wheel. Use your rear view mirror and your wing mirrors. It may be necessary to check over your shoulders every now and again but do so safely. If necessary you will need to stop. Backing your car this way is safe and allows good visbility (as long as you keep checking any blind spots as you move). I have seen too many people turn their head to back up and use only one hand on the wheel. Even worse some put their other arm accross the passenger seat. So what if there is another car waiting to go by, it can wait. Be aware of people. Shoppers may be in a world of their own. They may walk behind the car without thinking. It is important to keep your wits about you. Anticipate that people (or other cars) will do the unexpected. Check, check and check again. Make sure no one is about to walk behind you. Check the space for trolleys or pushbikes. Being confident about backing your car will make it easier.
